Anxiety is one of the most common mental health problems that almost all of us have experienced at one time or another. In fact, in such a fast-paced, high-pressure world, it is difficult to avoid. For some, it is chronic and takes a toll on the body and immune system, leading to physical health problems over time. 

 

Stress is a common cause of anxiety and can take many forms, from time pressure and deadlines to arguments and difficulty getting along with others. Read about some of the common symptoms and manifestations below to see if you might have a problem with anxiety and stress. 

   Common symptoms of anxiety are:

  • Excessive worry that is difficult to control

  • Edginess / Restlessness / Fear / Panic

  • Easily fatigued and irritable

  • Impaired concentration and memory

  • Nausea, dry mouth, tingling hands or feet

  • Increased muscle aches or soreness

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Fast heart rate and shortness of breath

  • Exaggerated startle response

Common symptoms of stress are:

  • Numbing / detachment / "zoning out"

  • Decreased emotional responsiveness

  • Reduction in awareness / narrowed vision

  • Depersonalization (feeling separated from self)

  • Irritability / negative mood 

  • Avoidance and procrastination

  • Headaches / muscle tension

  • When prolonged, can lead to anxiety symptoms
